I have been thinking today about the days of old and how my mum and nan used to do certain things on certain days of the week.
I remember Mondays was always laundry day. They would do the washing, hang it out to dry and then if the weather had been kind they would iron everything. If the weather wasn't kind, and that was more often than not, the house would have damp clothes hanging everywhere. Back in those days people didn't have washing machines and driers. Then something changed. Mum started to do the laundry on a Friday. She would meet up with a friend at the launderette on the corner of the road. They would both sit and natter while the washing whizzed round and round. I would go along as mums friend also had a daughter of my age. If we were lucky we would get a bag of chips while our mums nattered. Oooh I can nearly smell the nostril awakening, mouth watering smell of the vinegar now!
Monday was always cold meat left over from the Sunday roast with mash potatos and veg. Hmmm, yummy! Tuesdays were meat pie. On Wednesday nan would cook us a wonderful casserole. Perhaps liver and bacon or even a lamb stew with pearl barley. Thursday was normally chops or breast of lamb. Fridays, well Fridays was always fish of some description. Nan would cook the most wonderful cod roe or fish cakes. Saturdays were the day that mum went shopping so there was always something really nice to eat. Mince meat and dumplings or meat pie for example. If we were really lucky nan might have sent round a spotty dick or jam roly-poly to have with hot, thick custard.
Sunday, well Sunday was always without fail a roast dinner complete with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, bread sauce, onion sauce, apple sauce or mint sauce depending on what roast joint we were having. Sunday tea was always at nans. My aunt and her family would arrive and we would all sit down to a lovely spread. Cockles that the kids would get the dubious pleasure of shelling. Sometimes there were meat or fish paste sandwiches. I always laugh now when I think of those paste sandwiches. Horrible things they were! There would always be cucumber sliced very thinly and in a lovely green glass bowl in vinegar along with another matching bowl of beetroot. Celery would stand to attention in a celery jug too! Then the best part was the cakes nan made....ooh now they were to die for. Victoria sponge, fruit cake or even a trifle!
I wish I were back in those carefree and wonderfully happy days now! Somethings don't always change for the better do they. Things have to change and move on but sometimes, just sometimes it's not always how we ever imagined is it? Perhaps I am just reminissing too much and just want to be with all those I love and miss as they are no longer with me.
Life is tough at times!
